TAIPEI, Taiwan - Chinese drivetrain component manufacturer WheelTop made the step to launch a MTB group set for the first time. The prototype set comprised a derailleur, two batteries, and wireless shifter.

WheelTop General Manager Jame Song explains how the company started to develop the set 5 years ago. Today’s system, the EDS OX electronic derailleur system, uses a combination of both Bluetooth and NT+ protocol to communicate between the various components. According to Jame Song, the next step will be the integration of both AI and cloud control. “In future we will also offer the option to match the system with the e-bike battery.”

The WheelTop system configure with almost any 7 to 12 speed cassette and the number of gears can be set via the shifter options in the app. The whole system has a waterproofing rating of IP 67.

Road bike market follows next

For the development of the system, WheelTop worked closely together with the Zhejiang University and focused on the MTB market first. According to Jame Song, the road bike market will follow next, probably already later this year.
