Innovation in FSA headsets: the definitive solution for the market

The increasing diversification of frames demands components that cater to different requirements. Full Speed Ahead (FSA), with over 50 years of industry experience, develops headsets tailored to customer needs while integrating innovative technologies to optimize performance and design.

FSA has pioneered several innovations, including ACR, CBS, RAS, and HBS, each designed to offer advanced solutions in terms of integration, stability, customization, and durability. These technologies adapt to a wide range of bikes, from professional racing to cargo bikes, E-bikes, and Enduro models.

  • ACR (Aerodynamic Cable Routing): Fully integrates cables into the headset, offering a sleek, aerodynamic design that reduces air resistance. With customized Cone Spacers, ACR fits a wide variety of frames, giving manufacturers greater design flexibility.
  • CBS (Control Bike System): Ideal for long-tail and cargo bikes, CBS comes in two versions:
    • Self Centering: Automatically returns the steering to center, increasing stability and reducing wobbling.
    • Damping: Filters shimmy vibrations, improving comfort and safety, particularly on rough terrains. Integrating CBS gives manufacturers a competitive edge in terms of safety and handling.
  • RAS (Reach Adjust System): it enables reach adjustment in three positions (-5mm, 0mm, +5mm), offering easy customization for cyclists while reducing the need for multiple frame sizes for manufacturers. It allows for cost savings and greater flexibility in production as well as an easier assembling/disassembling process tool-free.
  • HBS (Headset Blocking System): designed for high-performance bikes, such as e-bikes and enduro models, HBS limits the steering angle to prevent damage from over-rotation. It also has the possibility to fully customize the size of on-caps and head-block angles.

Bearing development

Bearings are a critical component of any headset, and FSA has always developed them in-house. The latest advancement is the HPB (High Performance Bearing). Made entirely from stainless steel and sealed with advanced polymer, HPB bearings offer performance, particularly in extreme conditions. The CDNT (Chemical Deposited Nickel-iron Teflon) coating ensures high corrosion and wear resistance.

HPB bearings

One of the biggest challenges for manufacturers using integrated cable routing is the lifespan of the components. Bearings in such configurations endure heavy stress, typically lasting around 2-3 years. FSA has addressed this issue with HPB bearings, which extend component life to nearly unlimited levels. Backed by a lifetime warranty, these bearings eliminate the need for frequent maintenance or replacement, making them a cost-effective, reliable choice for manufacturers looking to deliver long-lasting products.

Rigorous Testing

Unlike many bike components, bearings are not governed by specific ISO standards. FSA developed its own testing machines and procedures to ensure the highest reliability for its products, subjecting every headset and bearing to extreme conditions.

  • Fatigue test: Simulates over 300.000 steering movements at varying intensities to test durability. This test ensures that both bearings and the integrated cables in the ACR system are protected from damage, preserving functionality over time.
  • Salt spray test: Validates corrosion resistance by exposing bearings to a saline environment. While standard stainless-steel bearings show rust after 40 hours, HPB bearings have endured over 200 hours without any corrosion, demonstrating their superior durability.
  • Mud test: Assesses the waterproofing and resistance of HPB bearings against dirt and debris infiltration. This ensures efficiency even in extreme conditions, such as those faced by Enduro and E-bike riders.

FSA’s custom testing processes exceed industry requirements, providing manufacturers with optimized components that guarantee long-lasting performance and reliability. This minimizes the risk of component failure and reduces maintenance costs.

A new era of headsets

With the introduction of HPB bearings and rigorous testing, FSA redefines the quality standard for headsets. Manufacturers choosing FSA can rely on innovative, durable components that ensure maximum reliability. In a market where maintenance and component longevity are critical, FSA stands out with safe, high-performance and durable solutions.
