Texlock: High-tech bike lock combines style with security

Until recently, the world of bicycle locks was largely dominated by utilitarian designs that prioritized function over form. However, in the past decade, Leipzig-based manufacturer Texlock has been offering an alternative: a lightweight, flexible, stylish, and secure lock, crafted from high-tech fibers and steel.

The journey of the Texlock began with an idea: a secure bike lock that feels good, looks good - and still meets conventional security standards. Entrepreneur Alexandra Baum, mother of three, co-founder and managing director of Texlock, has turned this vision into a marketable product. Together with her team, she shows that it is possible to bring a design-driven innovation to a saturated market, be economically successful and at the same time act in an ecologically responsible manner.

Unique design

The original Texlock stands out by not just covering a steel chain with a colorful fabric, but by using a patented hybrid construction. Several layers of high-tech fibers surround a hardened steel core, creating a lock that combines style with certified theft protection. It offers security against sawing, cutting tools, and fire while providing lasting protection for paintwork.

Texlock’s eyelet and orbit models offer certified theft protection alongside user-friendly handling. The orbit lock, available in 100 cm or 120 cm lengths and weighing a maximum of 1,320 grams, is lighter than comparable security locks. Its Click & Go feature ensures ease of use, while the Click & Connect system allows two orbit locks to be joined together for enhanced versatility.

Securing multiple components

The eyelet lock is a hybrid of a U-lock and textile rope, available in lengths of 80 cm, 120 cm, and 160 cm. It provides strong protection when securing multiple components of a bicycle. The eyelet U/X-lock bundle is certified with both ART2 and Sold Secure Gold. When paired with the D-lock, which is the lightest Sold Secure Diamond U-lock on the market, this combination offers ART3 and Sold Secure Diamond-certified protection, defending against more sophisticated attacks.

Flexibility and portability

Despite its 24 mm thick rope construction, the lock remains remarkably flexible, which makes it easy to connect. The soft textile material is comfortable to hold and fits snugly around the shoulder during transport. The lock is also compact enough to be stored in the bag, saving space when not in use.

High-tech meets craftsmanship

Texlock’s patented multi-layer braiding method encases a hardened steel chain with high-tech fibers, such as those used in space exploration - for example in sun sails, protective suits or the outer shells of missiles. This composite material offers resistance to saws, cutting tools, and fire, while the plastic coating on metal parts prevents scratching. The lock body of the Texlock orbit is specifically designed to offer robust protection against picking, tampering, and over-tightening.

Each lock is handmade in Leipzig. Most components of the rope are sourced locally in Germany. The packaging is made from recycled paper, and the company prides itself on a low production reject rate of just 0.011%. In addition, the complaint rate stands at an impressively low 0.01%. Texlock’s commitment to sustainability extends to their repair services, with products being repaired whenever possible and a replacement key service that extends the lock’s lifespan.
